How to create SCCM collections – an overview

This post will cover idea about what is SCCM collections and how to create. Collections are very critical for SCCM environment. If anything goes while creating collection it may affect entire environment. So be careful while building collections.

1.What is SCCM collection?

Collections are group of users or devices. Use collections for tasks like managing applications, deploying compliance settings, or installing software updates. In other words, SCCM collections are used to manage resources. Resources can be devices or users

2.Built-in and Custom collection

Built in collection are nothing but it’s already present when you will install your SCCM. Custom collections are custom made collection which created by admins

3.Limiting collection

Limiting collection option will be used when admins are creating sccm collection. Limiting collection is parent collection, so the collection resources are taking from limiting collection

4.User and device collection

SCCM consist of two categories of collection- user and device collection. User collection consists of only user resources and Device collection consist of only device resources. Both resources cannot be found or add in same collection

5.Membership rules

There are different types of rules that you can use to configure the members of a collection in Configuration Manager. Depending on the logic given in membership rule, a device or user will get added to a particular collection. Below are the types of membership rule

Direct rule – Use direct rules to choose the users or computers that you want to add to a collection. The membership doesn’t change unless you remove a resource from Configuration Manager.

Query rule – Dynamically update the membership of a collection based on a query that Configuration Manager runs on a schedule. It will automatically update the collection, example – OU based collection. Whenever Devices are added to OU paths in AD, devices will be automatically updated in collection

Include collection rule – As the name says, it includes the members from other collection

Exclude collection rule – it excludes the members from other collection

6.Create Custom Collection and add recourse manually

Custom collections are custom made. Here i will show how to create custom collection and manually add resources into it

For creating collection Navigate to

Asset and Compliances ||Device collection- right click||Select create device collection

Name- Test collection, Select All system as limiting collection

Here you can see one option “incremental update” – An incremental update periodically evaluate new     resources and add resources to collection where it qualifies. As best practice do not select incremental update option to normal collections. Click next to create collection

Collection has been created and then right clicks on the collection and select add resource to add resource to the collection

Then input the resource name ||Search||Add||Ok

7.Best practices
  • Do not create unwanted collection
  • Delete collections which are not needed
  • Do not check incremental update option for all collection
  • Provide understandable name for collection
  • Do not create normal collection under root of the device collection
  • Create folders for better arrangement of collection
