HOW TO INSTALL SCCM DISTRIBUTION POINT

Distribution points plays the vital role of delivering content to the clients. Whenever a client needs to download a new operating system or just the bits of an application or a package, it needs to contact a distribution point on the site. In this post we will learn How to install DP role in server.

SCALE
  • primary and secondary supports up to 250 DPs
  • primary and secondary supports up to 2000 Pull-distribution points
  • distribution points supports up to 4000 clients
  • DP supports total up to 1000 packages and applications
PREREQUISITE

It is mandatory to check all the prerequisite for a successful DP installation

Local administrator group

On the DP, add site system account in the administrator group 

  • Type lusrmgr.msc in Run
  • Expand local user and Groups
  • Click on groups
  • Open administrator
  • Add SCCM computer account
Roles and Features

1. IIS

IIS needs to be installed in the server. Either you can install prior to DP installation or while doing the installation.

 Make sure that that below roles are installed before installation

  • IIS WMI compatibility tool
  • IIS scripting tool

2. Remote differential compression

Go to server roles and features and install remote differential compression

3. Firewall

Ensure below ports are opened

  • 135
  • 445
Note 💡 better to take one pre-reboot of the server prior to the installation
STEPS TO INSTALL DISTRIBUTION POINT 

Post all the thorough prerequisite check, we can start the installation DP.

  • In the configuration manager console
  • Click on Administration
  • Navigate to Site configuration > Right click on site
  • Select create site system server to start the DP installation process
  • On the general page specify the name of the server
  • Select the Site code
  • By default site system installation will be selected
  • Click Next
  • On the proxy page, do not specify any proxy
  • Click Next
  • Select the Distribution role
  • Click Next 
  • Select IIS
  • Rest options are depends on your setup
  • Click next
  • On the communication page Select HTTP
  • If your setup supports secure connection, then select HTTPs
  • By default HTTP will be selected
  • Click Next
  • On the drive setting page, specify the drive space required in MB. Here I have mention 100000 MB
  • Content location are set to automatic by default, that means it will take most free spaced drive automatically or else you can specify the drive
  • Click Next 
  • Not enabling pull distribution point. For more info click here
  • Click next
  • PXE is optional. I have not enabled here.
  • Click next
  • Not enabling multicast
  • Click next
  • Content validation can be done later
  • If you enable the content validation, configuration manager will verify the contents on DP
  • Click next
  • We can  add the boundary groups later onwards
  • Click next

Completed with installation process

VERIFICATION
LOGS

Logs will show how the distribution points are getting installed

  1. Distmgr.log on the server
  2. Smsdpprov.log on the DP server
  3. Hman.log on the server
FILES

Post the SCCM DP installation below files should be created on the site server

CONSOLE

You can track the installation process from Configuration manager console. Navigate to Monitoring > Distribution Point Configuration Status

MONITORING

If you have multiples DPs, we can monitor the health status of DP via below methods

 Via CONSOLE
  • Administration > Overview > Distribution points
  • Monitoring > Overview > System Status > Site status
  • Go to Monitoring > Overview > System Status > Component status
  • Navigate to Monitoring > Overview > Distribution status > Distribution Point Configuration Status
  • Open Monitoring > Overview > Reporting > Reports > Software Distribution – Content
Via LOGS
  • Migmctrl.log
  • Pkgxfermgr.log
  • Distmgr.log
